Class Descriptions
Yoga Basics: Ideal for beginners, those desiring a gentle pace, or for those needing a refresher course. Classes cover principals of breath, postural alignment, and relaxation techniques. Props such as blankets, blocks, and belts are employed to enhance awareness and understanding. Classic, beginning-level postures are introduced, along with dynamic warming movements synchronized with breath. Partner work may also be used as a learning and community-building tool. Classes build a solid foundation of strength, flexibility, and awareness, and are taught compassionately as a path of Self-development and inquiry.
Introduction to Hatha Yoga: See above description for Yoga Basics; Intro courses use a hierarchal format, in six- to eight-week increments.
Open Levels: These classes are appropriate for those with some experience or beginners in good physical shape. Taught in dynamic style, vinyasa (movement synchronized with breath) is alternated with active stillness (held postures). Beginning to intermediate level postures are employed, with variations offered to support students' challenges and abilities. Emphasis is on practicing with compassion and a sense of adventure, and on developing deeper levels of awareness and understanding of one's Self and the practice of Yoga.
Dynamic Flow & Align: These classes blend movement initiated by breath (vinyasa), active stillness, full body bandha (energy locks), attention to alignment of joints, and mindful awareness through gaze (driste). The holding of postures (one minute or longer) is followed by vinyasa which is intended to restore organic mobility, fluidity, and balance. Classes are intended to encourage a compassionate inquiry to Self-discovery, while increasing the body's supple strength and flexibility and the mind's clarity. Backbends, inversions, and some intermediate postures may be included. Intended as an intermediate practice for those with some experience, nevertheless beginners in good physical condition who enjoy a challenge are welcome.
Power Vinyasa: Same format as Dynamic Flow & Align, but taught in a studio heated to 86 degrees F; not recommended for pregnant women or those with recent injuries. Please inquire with instructor.
Pranayama, Meditation, Restoratives: Pranayama consists of specialized breathing techniques, meditation is used to quiet the mind, and restoratives are therapuetic postures utilizing props and supports, held for longer periods (two to five minutes). These practices are sometimes included in Open Levels classes to provide opportunities to experience other Hatha Yoga practices.
